What to Expect During an Routine Dental Extraction

Dental Extractions incite as much fear as horror movies do, but sometimes these very procedures can be life saving and can relieve you of immense pain and problems in future.

Before you come in for an Extraction procedure, be sure to arrive after you’ve eaten well. Undergoing an extraction on an anxious patient on an empty stomach is the recipe for a Syncope to occur or in other words- cause one to faint. But these can be safely overcome.

Before we proceed we make sure you understand why the tooth needs removing, we ensure that you are calm and prepared for what to expect- which are as follows:

1. Numbing spray/gel is applied to your gums so that you don’t feel the pinch of the injection needle. This maybe bitter to taste so avoid swallowing- also because it will cause superficial temporary numbness to your throat if you do.

2. The Local Anaesthetic (LA) inside the syringe is basic in nature and is slowly delivered to the site to make it feel as painless as possible. You may feel a little tingly at the area it is deposited at.

3. Depending on the injection site- discomfort can vary from negligible to (regrettably) an intense dull pressure running up your palate. We’ll give you a heads-up, don’t worry.

4. In a few minutes you will feel like your face is swelling up like a balloon- but in fact, it’s just the feeling of “numbness”that has started to kick in. Certain injections can also cause adjacent structures to go numb- like the parts of the lip, nose or tongue. It is important to note that the LA only takes away pain and not pressure. Feeling pressure during an extraction is completely normal.

5. We verify if the tooth has completely gone numb and only then proceed with the extraction.

6. We start separating the gum from the tooth ( you won’t feel this at all )

7. Pressure is then applied to the tooth in varying directions to make it loose within the bone socket. It’s completely normal to feel this pressure.

8. Once the tooth is mobile enough, we retrieve the tooth from the socket.

9. We inspect the socket for any pus, granulation tissues, or sharp bony edges and treat these accordingly.

10. We place a gauze pack at your extraction site, deliver the instructions for quick healing and send you off for a nice cup of ice-cream.

After an extraction you would be recalled within 4-7 days to review how you are healing. You can contact us, no matter the time, if in case you face a difficulty during your healing period.
