Do You Really Need A Crown After a Root Canal?

Yes and No.

Yes- you do need your teeth protected,

No- not exclusively by a crown. Other options include Onlay, Inlay, Vonlay that aim to do the same thing as a crown, but more conservatively.

Why is it necessary?

Teeth with extensive decay that involves the pulp, requires an RCT. By this time, extensive tooth structure is infected, soft or is left undermined and may need to be removed to prevent future fractures. This means a large part of the tooth is missing- strength, therefore is compromised and need restoring.

Furthermore, Root Canal Treated teeth are devoid of nerves and blood vessels and hence lack the nutrition required to stay strong. Overtime, these teeth becomes desiccated, brittle and therefore susceptible to fractures and re-infection.

Placing in a Dental Crown, prevents the remaining tooth structure from flexion and undue stresses -and prolongs the lifespan of your treated teeth further more.
